At its November 19, 2019 meeting, the Westwood Community Council voted to support designation of the historic Kelley Music Building in Westwood as an Historic-Cultural Monument. The WCC motion supports a unanimous vote by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission to support the Los Angeles Conservancy’s nomination of the 1930 Kelly Music Building (aka Alice’s Restaurant, Tanino Ristorante Building), designed by Master Architect Paul Revere Williams, and located at 1041-1043 Westwood Boulevard in Westwood Village, as a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, and to support the Commission’s recommendation that the Los Angeles City Council add this property to the City’s official list of Historic-Cultural Monuments.
The Kelley Music Building is important for its association with the early development of Westwood Village and as one of the earliest commercial architectural commissions by master architect Paul Revere Williams. Completed in 1930, the Kelly Music Building was part of the initial development phase of Westwood Village, which officially opened in late 1929.
In June 2019, the Conservancy nominated the building for local Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM) recognition. On July 18, the Cultural Heritage Commission (CHC) voted in support to take the HCM nomination under consideration.
On September 19, the CHC met to review and voted in full support of the HCM nomination. It will now go before the City Council’s Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) committee. A date for PLUM has been set for November 26 at 2:30pm.
